The Daughters of the American Revolution take their history very seriously. After all, they are all descended from a patriot of the American Revolution! So when they come across a teacher who “brings the past to life”, they take notice.
The Telegraph (Nashua, NH) reports that, on April 25th, Laura DeRosa, an American History teacher at Hollis Brookline Middle School, won the New Hampshire state-level DAR contest for Outstanding American History teacher and then came in second place on the national level.
When she won the state competition, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported that DeRosa encourages her 8th grade students to use primary sources to learn about history, something that is commonplace in high school AP classes. Her classes submit about 100 essays each year for the DAR essay contest, and her students have also won numerous accolades.
